The ABC’s of Unusual Sea Creatures is an abecedarium of sea creatures unique in name or form. My process for this publication was illustrating the creatures in watercolor, designing and typesetting the book, and hand binding the book in accordion style. The book includes an illustration of each creature and the creature’s informal and scientific names.
One constraint of this project was the color palette. I was given two monochromatic neutrals, so I chose a blue tinted white for my paper color to compliment that warmth and bring the ocean back into my book. I chose the font Adobe Jenson for its organic, elegant qualities that reflected the watercolor illustrations.

I created this book to educate readers on the vast number of creatures that live in the ocean and the beauty of all of them. The number of living sea creatures goes beyond the more well known dolphin, whale, or sea turtle and they all matter the same. I hope that this book inspires readers to be more conscious of the impact they have on the ocean and the well-being of the creatures living in it.
